Today, on World Blood Donor Day, we’re shining a light on a critical reality: blood donations save lives, but for many patients, finding the right blood match isn’t as simple as finding any blood type.
Patients living with Sickle Cell Disease, Thalassemia, certain cancers, bone marrow disorders, trauma injuries, and those requiring frequent transfusions often need blood from donors with similar ancestral backgrounds. Yet while Black Americans make up roughly 13% of the U.S. population, only about 3–4% of blood donors identify as Black.
That’s why representation matters. That’s why awareness matters. And that’s why culture matters.
Through artists, DJs, athletes, influencers, schools, and faith communities, we can reach the next generation of donors and help close the blood gap. One donation can save up to three lives, but blood has a limited shelf life—meaning blood banks need new donors every single day.
